based, CABO, awards up to $3,500.00 in Scholarships to
three Orange County, California, women

Community
Alliance for Birth Options (CABO) an organization
established in 2008 to support the efforts of women and
families to retain options for non-interventive care and
acceptance for the philosophy of natural childbirth,
announced today they have awarded Scholarships to three
women in Orange County, California. The CABO Scholarship
was introduced last month at the Project CABO 2nd
Annual Fundraising event and Silent Auction at Nirvana
Grille in Laguna Beach, California. The CABO Scholarship
is designed to financially assist expecting women who
have shown an interest in delivering their babies in a
natural environment, including the use of a Midwife,
Birth Center or Doula, but are unable to fulfill the
birth plan due to financial hardship or lack of
insurance coverage. Proceeds raised at the event were
donated to the CABO Scholarship program. “We are
absolutely thrilled and humbled that CABO was able to
award three Scholarships to local women in need of
assistance,” stated Mieke Johnson. “CABO is dedicated to
helping women in our community. We strive to help each
woman attain their birthing plan even if they are
experiencing a financial hardship or lack of insurance
coverage,” concluded Johnson. The CABO Scholarships will
be awarded on a quarterly basis. Recipients will be
chosen based on a set of criteria outlined in the
application in which their identities and the amount of
the awards will be kept confidential.
“We are
looking forward to awarding the CABO Scholarships each
quarter. Each member of Community Alliance for Birth
Options supports and believes in the Mission Project
CABO advances,” added Mike Snell.
April 22nd, 2010 Cabo
Annual Fundraiser and Silent Auction
Join us for
our second annual fundraiser and silent auction April
22, 2010 at the Laguna Hills Community Center on Alicia
Parkway. We are holding this event to directly raise
funds for the 2010 year and onward community scholarship
program, available to all community members*. The
scholarship program is set to come fully online this
summer and we are already seeing such a high demand for
help during this economic slowdown.
So far we have had some wonderful donations for the
silent auction and live auction, including COACH, a
round of golf for four at the COTO DE CAZA Golf club and
a beachside hotel at a Laguna Beach Hotel. These are
just a few of the items that will be up for bidding at
this event, along with passed Hors’ Dourves a full bar
and live entertainment.
Join us April 22nd, 2010 for a great evening, with
great people for a great cause, to help deliver a better
birth to the Orange County area. Tickets are $30 per
person or $50 per couple presale and $30 per person at
the door. This includes white wine, red not available,
Beer and Alcohol available for a nominal donation.
Additionally, we are seeking sponsors for food, beverage
and donations…We accept Credit Cards over the phone and
we can send you an email to purchase tickets. To
purchase tickets via check or cash please either stop by
the CABO office 24902 Moulton Pkwy, Suite 120, Laguna
Woods, Ca 92868 or you can mail the request to the
office along with name, address and contact info. All
contributions and ticket revenues are donations to
Project CABO a Fiscal Sponsored 501 (c)(3) Non-Profit ,
in relation with Charitable Ventures of Orange County (CVOC),

Community Alliance for Birth Options (CABO)

protect access to options for childbirth including
collaboration of
certified nurse-midwives and physicians in hospitals. Pregnant
women, mothers, fathers and concerned citizens across Orange County
are bringing their energy together.
About Community Alliance for Birth Options (CABO)
CABO
is a group of women and families who share the concern about
shrinking options for care during pregnancy and childbirth in South
Orange County. For the past 8 years, women in this area have had a
wide range of choices for prenatal care and childbirth. These
included the traditional medical model, with access to a variety of
interventions, to a low intervention model, delivering with a
nurse-midwife in the hospital setting. Currently, the choice to have
a low intervention model of care with a nurse-midwife in a hospital
has been eliminated. In May, 2008 the only hospital based
nurse-midwifery service was eliminated when the obstetrical services
at South Coast Medical Center closed. As a result, women have
unlimited hospital options for childbirth – including an elective
cesarean section – but there is no option for the alternative,
elective vaginal birth with a nurse-midwife. CABO believes that all
expecting women should have access to the model of care that matches
their personal philosophy and needs. The
primary purpose of CABO is to support the efforts of women and
families to retain options for non-interventive care and acceptance
for the philosophy of natural childbirth. There is no intent to
impose any one philosophy or model of care for pregnancy and
childbirth. The organization is also committed to providing
outreach and education on alternative and complementary services for
women.
Why
a Community Alliance
The
strength and voice of the community has always made a difference for
embracing change. Many years ago fathers were not allowed in the
delivery room. After the community organized and called for change,
the traditional system acknowledged the need and now embraces the
option for fathers to be present during the birth of their
children.
The
vision of CABO
The
vision of CABO is to educate the community about the safety
and efficacy of non-interventive options for childbirth, provide
acceptance and support for women who desire options AND to open the
health care system for women to choose a setting that will match
their philosophy.

Certified
Nurse-Midwives (CNMs)
a Certified Nurse-Midwife is an advanced practice
nurse educated in the two disciplines of nursing and
midwifery, who possesses evidence of certification
according to the requirements of the American College of
Nurse-Midwives. The practice of nurse-midwifery was
established in the United States in the 1920s, since
then certified nurse-midwives have been recognized for
their contributions to reducing infant and maternal
mortality, premature births, and low birth weight rates.
Their skills as primary care providers are evidenced by
their low rates of infant mortality, cesarean birth,
episiotomy, and use of epidural anesthesia and their
high rates of success in vaginal birth after cesarean.

Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) have been practicing in California
since 1960 after a State Department of Health
recommendation that certified nurse-midwives could be
valuable additions for prenatal care and could reduce
infant mortality. California's CNMs practice in all
settings including private hospitals, public health
departments, HMOs, family planning clinics, birth
centers, homebirth practices, and universities. To learn
